“I’m NEVER living in this heat,” a very pregnant twenty-three year old self told Chris when we visited family in Phoenix one July. Fast-forward over three decades of marriage, and we have lived in the desert for most of it – California desert, Arizona desert, high desert, low desert, brown, brown, brown.
When I look through the eyes of an artist, I notice the desert has a unique, abundant beauty.
From the clear skies to the tawny colored landscape, the desert is painted
The skies shift from clear, azure and cerulean blue to cobalt and deep indigo. The sunset horizon glows in amber and gold with clouds brilliantly burning in crimson, coral, and magenta before fading into a periwinkle twilight. Midnight is cloaked in black velvet adorned with sparkling diamonds, testifying to the greatness of God.
Life abounds in a place that at first seems barren. Saguaros, cholla, and ocotillo add brush strokes of olive, sage, and emerald greens to the sable brown and rust red landscape while desert flowers delicately dot the scene with lavender, blush, coral, and vermillion. Such rich colors fill the desert with what I call “Abundant Beauty.”
